Fret Francais translates literally as French cargo and it is one of our speciality services.

Today we are sending a curtain sided Mercedes Sprinter van from Birmingham to Lyon in France.

We were contacted yesterday at 1600hrs by a new client who had been "let down" by another freight company at the last minute. They needed a printing machine collected today (Friday) in Birmingham for delivery over the weekend to Lyon in South East France.

Our dedicated van expert Simon Poole (simon@bfreight.co.uk) made some calls to our regular French operators and within thirty minutes from the original enquiry he had a van booked and the ETA was advised to the client.

Why using an independent freight forwarder can be good for your business

Freight and shipping are multi billion pound industries in the UK. In 2012, DHL for example posted revenues of EUR 13.4 billion. There are many other large operators in the industry at a similar level, but how should you choose your freight forwarding company? Should you choose a larger company global company or would a smaller independent freight forwarder be better for you?

The decision to go with a smaller freight forwarder has several benefits. Firstly, a smaller freight company will have lower overheads and expenditure. The bigger companies generally only operate at fixed prices and with fixed supply channels whereas smaller companies have the freedom to use a wider variety of suppliers and can often do the same job at a lower rate without compromising quality of service.

Secondly, a smaller freight forwarding company will offer a more personal and bespoke service. We have all suffered the feeling of being "just a number" while dealing with large companies. Many smaller freight companies will be dealing a smaller client base and many will know their clients by the sound of their voice on the telephone.

There are not any freight companies that operate solely on their own trucks, ships and planes, some might have sole agency agreements but most will sub contract services at some point within the shipment. Many large freight forwarders have bulk throughput discounts with certain carriers which limits their choice of carrier and can limit the transit times and price. Even in 2012, many European countries are still very regionalised. A smaller freight forwarder will be able to save costs by using locally based hauliers rather than having to use a depot and hub system.

How would you guarantee the professionalism of a freight company? Many freight companies are member of BIFA (British International Freight Association) this means that they:

* Maintain a freight liability insurance policy
* Demonstrate competence and understanding of the international freight industry
* Abide by the BIFA Code of Conduct

The morning we had an enquiry from an existing customer to collect one pallet of machine parts in Perlen, Switzerland for urgent transport to Kings Lynn in Norfolk.

We located a "man with a van" in Switzerland for collection today (within two hours) to deliver to Kings Lynn on Wednesday. We have taken care of the Swiss export documentation and the UK customs clearance (as Switzerland is outside the EU).
